We’ve all done it….used the moisturizer or foundation that we’ve had for 5 years….because why would we throw something out that we’ve spent our hard earned money on? What we don’t realize is what expired makeup can do to our skin. When kept and used for too long, expired makeup can build up a ton of bacteria, which can clog your pores, create texture and bumps, cause irritation, redness, and/or skin and eye infections.
I don’t think many of us (including me, up until about a year ago) think about our makeup or beauty products expiring. We’re so excited to get something new or try that new moisturizer that we’ve been eyeing for months that we don’t pay attention. So, this post is to share what I do to help me remember how much time I have to use up that coveted moisturizer, and when it’s time to throw it out!
Most beauty products tell you how many months it will last right on the bottle or container. Look for what resembles a picture of an opened jar with a number inside of it. Some will say “6M”, “12M”, or even “24M”. As soon as I open a new product, I write the month and the year that the product will expire right on the container. If you’re like me and buy a lot of new products throughout the year, it’s impossible for me to keep track of when they expire, so this tip really saves me!
If your product does not show these details (like lipliners, lipsticks, or eye shadow), and it’s a product that has a lid or is covered, then more than likely that product is going to last about 2 years.
I really hope y’all enjoyed this post and that it inspired you to start paying attention to those expiration dates! Let me know in the comments if this is something you plan on starting! I love hearing from you guys. Have a great rest of the week!
