Hello beauties! I know, I know, it’s been a while since I’ve posted. My husband and I have been working on another project that I will tell you guys about soon! We’ve really been focusing on that, so I haven’t had much time to create a ton of content. More to come on that later!
Today, I’m talking all about sun protection, and sharing my personal favorite products that I’ve been using lately that have been game changers in protecting my skin from the sun. To me, sun protection is probably the most important thing you can do for your skin. However, many sunscreens I’ve tried don’t work well in my daily routine because they sit horribly on my skin and underneath makeup, are too greasy, or they leave a white cast on my face and body. Not to mention that most sunscreens are filled with harmful ingredients.
One of the main (and most harmful) ingredients in your every day sunscreen is OXYBENZONE. Not only can this chemical lead to skin irritations and hormonal imbalances, but it could also lead to skin cancer. In the past year, I’ve found and fallen in love with Supergoop. I was first attracted to this brand because NONE of their products are made with oxybenzone, they are all paraben free, and they all have broad spectrum protection (read why this is important in my tips below).
I also really love that their products are so unique, and as a girl who loves makeup, it’s so easy to add Supergoop into my routine. They have setting sprays, setting powders, highlighting sticks, primers….ALL with broad spectrum protection! You really just can’t get any better than that. Here are a few of the products I’ve used and a little bit about why I love them.
City Sunscreen Serum SPF 30: This can be used alone because it’s really moisturizing, but I use this after I apply my daily moisturizer. It’s super hydrating and lightweight, and it doesn’t leave my face feeling really greasy like most sunscreens do. I use this on days where I’m not wearing makeup.
Sun-Defying Sunscreen Oil SPF 50: I use this one all over my body when I’m going to be out in the sun. I love that it’s in a spray bottle, so it’s easy to apply. Even though this is an oil, it doesn’t leave your skin feeling oily or greasy because it’s so lightweight. This is what I will using during our vacation to Cancun, which is coming up in a few days!
Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40: I can’t say enough good things about this product! This has quickly taken the place of my every day primer. It has a velvety texture and goes on SO smoothly. This is the last step in my skincare routine right before I apply makeup. I don’t use this when I’m not wearing makeup because I have the City Serum, but you could definitely use it alone if you wanted to. Many of the foundations I use do not have SPF in them, so using this product before makeup is a must for me. Even if I am using a foundation with SPF, I still use this as a primer just because I love the velvety finish it gives my skin.
Refresh Setting Mist SPF 50: A setting spray with SPF?! YES PLEASE. If you wear makeup, this spray is a MUST for you. Since you should be reapplying SPF every couple of hours, how are you supposed to do that if you have makeup on? This spray is your answer!! I will admit that I still use my Morphe Setting Spray to initially set my makeup, but I carry this spray with me to set my face when I need an SPF refresh throughout the day.
Of course I haven’t tried ALL of their products, but all of the ones that I’ve used have been amazing! I really think that Supergoop is the best brand of sun protection with the most versatility and the cleanest ingredients. They have so many awesome products to choose from, so whichever you choose to start with I’m sure you won’t be disappointed!
Kristle’s Tips:
- Don’t be fooled by those sunscreens that are higher in SPF (like SPF 80 or 100). It’s really just a marketing tactic to get you to buy, because you see a higher SPF and you think there is more protection. Actually, SPF 50 should be your max. It will protect you from about 98% of UVB rays, so anything higher than that really doesn’t offer much more protection.
- Always choose a sunscreen with broad spectrum protection. SPF only protects you from UVB rays (sun burn), while broad spectrum protects you from both UVB and UVA rays (skin damage and aging).
- Reapply your sunscreen often. The sun breaks down the ingredients that protect your skin, so be sure to apply at least every couple of hours.
I hope y’all loved this post and that it helped bring some awareness to how important it is to protect your skin. Comment down below if you’ve tried any of these products and come visit me on Instagram and say hi! Jacob and I are leaving to Cancun on Sunday and couldn’t be more excited. We will be vlogging while we’re there, so be ready for a video when we get back!
