Hi, loves! Wow, this Summer has been a crazy one with all the traveling I’ve been doing, but it’s finally September which means Fall is in close sight! I can’t wait for football, pumpkins, cooler weather, and of course the holidays. It’s my favorite time of year and I’m so excited!
In today’s post, I’m going to be talking about all of my tips for getting the cutest and easiest MESSY BUN! I get questions on this a lot because honestly, this is how I wear my hair 80% of the time haha. I normally don’t have the time to style my hair because it’s so long, and when I do, I spend all my time on my makeup and then forget about my hair haha. Anyone else?
So I figured I would put together a post with my tips that I feel are 100% necessary when doing your own messy bun! I also put a video tutorial together for those of you who prefer to see it done first hand.
MY TIPS:
- MAKE SURE YOUR HAIR IS DIRTY: This is the #1 most important thing for getting the perfect messy bun. Y’all are probably thinking, “gross, you want me to have dirty hair?” But what I mean by this is, your hair needs to have some texture and grit to it in order for the messy bun to hold and actually look “messy”. If you try and do a messy bun with freshly clean, soft hair, it’s just not going to work. Add a texturizing spray like THIS ONE all throughout your hair and then add a little bit of a light hairspray (THIS ONE is my favorite) after. You will start to feel some gritty texture and see a ton of volume, and that’s exactly what you want!
- GIVE YOUR HAIR A LITTLE TEASE: This step might not be necessary for those of you who have thick hair. But for my girls who have thin or even medium hair, teasing it just a bit will definitely help your bun to hold and also make it look much fuller. I typically just use a regular brush for this, but I would recommend using a teasing comb similar to THIS ONE.
- USE THE RIGHT HAIR TIE: This is optional, but I really think that using the right hair tie helps a ton. I used to use those thicker, black, elastic hair ties, and while they worked fine, they don’t work nearly as well as THESE. Since I have switched, I have found that these don’t pull my hair as much as the elastic ones, and my bun still stays really secure without it feeling too tight.
- PULL YOUR BUN: Once your hair is up, give your bun a few pulls and tugs to get it to look thicker and messier.
- USE BOBBY PINS: When you’re doing a messy bun, you will have lots of stray hairs poking out everywhere, especially since you’ve pulled on it a bit. You’ll want to use bobby pins to pin those hairs down and also to help keep your messy bun in place.
And that’s it! It’s super simple, quick, and easy. This messy bun shouldn’t take you longer than 5 minutes to do.
