My favorite go-to hairstyle is, and always will be, voluminous, effortless curls. I think the misconception is that in order to get your curls to look great, it takes a lot of time and effort. But I personally think that it’s one of the easiest and quickest hairstyles to achieve as long as you have the right products and tools. Over the years, I have tried a million different products, irons, wands, and techniques, and I think I have finally found what works best for me.
HAIR HEALTH
Before we get into the products and styling, I want to talk quickly about hair health. Keeping your hair healthy is the #1 key to getting your hair to style the way that you want it. Some of my tips for keeping your hair healthy are getting it trimmed every 6-8 weeks to keep the dead ends away. Dead ends eventually lead to breakage, which prevents your hair from growing. Hair masks and hair treatments are also essential for keeping your hair moisturized and strong. And of course using heat protectant if/when you use any kind of heat on your hair. I think it’s also important to use a shampoo and conditioner that is free of sulfates and parabens. This is my current favorite shampoo and this is my favorite conditioner.
FAVORITE PRODUCTS
It’s a 10 Leave-In Keratin Spray – I use this spray after I’ve washed and towel dried my hair. Not only is it a heat protectant, but it keeps your hair soft, shiny, and tangle-free. I can’t live without it!
Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray – Adding this spray to your hair before you curl it will allow the curl to hold all day. If you have an issue with your curls lasting, try using a texture spray. Sometimes your hair might be too clean and the curls will end up falling. Hold your hair up from the ends, and as you spray, slowly release your hair a little at a time letting it fall.
Living Proof Dry Shampoo – This is a great product to use if you don’t wash your hair every day. It helps to keep your hair clean and oil-free. Spray this all over the roots of your hair and massage into the scalp, brush your hair out, and style as normal. If you have thinner hair, then you will love this because it will provide some volume at your roots, which will make your hair look thicker than it is.
- Tip: Use this even if your hair is clean. It also adds more texture, which will allow your curls to stay longer.
Ouai Wave Spray – I have been obsessed with this product since I started using it about 6 months ago. I spray this on my hair after I’m finished curling. It holds my curls in place and gives them more texture without weighing them down. It really helps my curls last all day.
L’Oreal Elnett Satin Hairspray – I LOVE this hairspray because it’s really lightweight and not crunchy, and it seriously gives your hair so much lasting volume. It’s very “soft”, if that makes sense!
CURLING ROUTINE
Prep your hair:
Remember to spray texturizing spray in your hair before you start curling. This will help your hair curl faster and keep the curl.
This step is optional, but if you haven’t washed your hair in a day or so and it’s a little oily, then spray some dry shampoo in your roots. Like I said earlier, I do this even if my hair is clean because it gives my hair more volume.
Curl:
This curling iron is my new best friend! This is the ultimate tool for curling your hair in just a few minutes. It’s so good, that you only need to leave your hair on the wand for about 3 seconds, and you have the perfect curl. Because you don’t have to keep your hair on the wand for very long, it also prevents damage from the heat. Most curling irons take a while to heat up, but this one literally only takes a few seconds. It’s a little on the pricey side, but it’s worth EVERY penny! I really love the Bellami 6 in 1 Curling Wand but you definitely have to use much smaller sections of hair and you have to leave your hair on the wand for much longer, both of which make the curling process much longer.
Always leave about an inch of hair out of the curling iron when you curl each piece. This will create more of a natural curl.
For a more undone look, alternate between curling every other piece away from your face and then towards your face. If you want more of a “glam” look, then curl all pieces away from your face. I do both and love the looks equally. It just depends on my mood, what I’m wearing, and where I’m going.
Finish:
After you’ve curled all of your hair, run your fingers through the curls to loosen them up. Then, spray your curls with Ouai Wave Spray and finish off by using the L’Oreal Elnett Satin Hairspray.
